Pope Clement XI and his Arbëresh origins

TIRANA, July 23 – Gjon Françesk Albani, known as Pope Clement XI, was born on July 23, 1649, in Urbino, Italy.

Clement XI became an important figure of the Catholic Church in the early 18th century. He came from the Albani family, a noble family with Arbëresh origins from Arbëria. The family settled in Italy during the Arbëresh migrations that followed the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans. It preserved the memory of its roots and played an important role in Italy’s political and religious life.

Albani led the Catholic Church for 21 years, from November 23, 1700, until March 19, 1721. During his papacy, he faced major political and religious challenges in Europe, including the War of the Spanish Succession and complex relations between the Papacy and European powers.

Clement XI also supported the documentation of church history in the former Illyrian territories. His papacy was linked to the development of Illyricum Sacrum, a major historical work later compiled by Jesuit scholars Daniele Farlati and Jacopo Coleti. The work documented the ecclesiastical history of Illyrian territories, including Albanian lands and the wider Balkans.

Earlier, in 1660, Albani moved to Rome after completing primary school and studied ancient languages and law at the Roman College. He graduated in law in 1668 and began his religious career in 1670.

During his papacy, the first Albanian religious council, known as the Assembly of Arbër, took place in 1703. The meeting introduced changes in the clergy’s approach to doctrinal, moral, canonical and episcopal issues. Albanian Orthodox priests also sought the Pope’s support, contributing to closer religious ties.

Pope Clement XI passed away on March 19, 1721, in Rome.
