Excavations Begin in Zubin Potok Over Suspected Mass Grave of Albanian Victims

Just hours after the arrest of two Serbian suspects, Kosovo Police special units and teams from the Institute of Forensic Medicine were deployed to the municipality of Zubin Potok in northern Kosovo.

Excavations were carried out in the village of Kalludër e Vogël following suspicions that the site may contain the remains of more than 20 Albanian civilians who were abducted in April 1999 in North Mitrovica.

“At the request of the Special Prosecution Office and under an order issued by the Basic Court in Pristina, the relevant institutions are carrying out the court-ordered exhumation, autopsy and identification of human remains at a location in the Municipality of Zubin Potok,” Arbnora Luta, spokesperson for Kosovo’s Special Prosecution Office, told Euronews Albania.

Twenty-three Albanians were abducted on 23 April 1999 by Serbian police and military forces and were reportedly taken towards the Kosovo–Montenegro border. Their fate has remained unknown ever since.

The two arrested suspects are believed to be linked to the case.
