Prime Minister Edi Rama has declared that he will not step down and will continue his political mission until Albania achieves membership in the European Union. He made the remarks during a meeting at the Palace of Brigades with the Socialist Party’s political leaders and the chairs of the parliamentary committees.

In his speech, Rama addressed calls for his resignation, arguing that stepping down in response to pressure from a minority would be neither an act of leadership nor institutional responsibility.

“I like that chant and it energizes me so much that, to be honest, it even makes me think I could write another song with it. But beyond the chant, leaving the office entrusted to us by the majority simply because a minority is shouting in unison is neither a trait of leadership, nor institutional responsibility, nor intellectual humility. It is simply the abandonment of a responsibility.

Even leaving office today would be an unforgivable disregard for a great national mission. Let whoever wants keep chanting. The mission will continue until we raise our flag and Skanderbeg in the European Union.

I do not want to miss Albania’s defining moment of joining the EU. If it were not for the EU agenda, I would have retired to my village. I would also have stepped down as leader of the Socialist Party,” Rama said.

During the meeting, Rama also presented a new annex to the “Besa” document, which focuses on the reflection process regarding the “Flamingos” Boulevard initiative.
