Gonxhja: Tirana Becomes Albania’s Tourism Capital as Cross-Border Tourism Gains Importance

Tourism Minister Blendi Gonxhja said Albania is reshaping its tourism policies to improve service quality and extend the tourist season throughout the year.

He explained that the country is following the National Tourism Strategy and introducing new measures to strengthen sustainable tourism development.

Furthermore, Gonxhja highlighted cultural tourism as a growing priority. He said Albania is promoting historic sites, cultural events, art activities and creative industries to offer visitors richer experiences.

The minister also described Tirana as Albania’s main tourism destination. He said the capital attracts more visitors and reflects the changing way tourists want to discover the country.

Moreover, Gonxhja stressed that tourism connects with many economic sectors, including gastronomy, handicrafts, urban development and cultural heritage.

He added that Albania is encouraging quality investments in tourism infrastructure through public-private partnerships. These projects, he said, can create a positive impact across different sectors of the economy.

In addition, the minister emphasized the importance of protecting cultural and natural heritage. He said institutions continue to monitor standards and support UNESCO-listed areas such as Butrint, Berat, Gjirokastër, the Ohrid Lake region and Durrës.

Gonxhja also pointed to new opportunities in the blue economy, mountain tourism and agrotourism. According to him, Albania must develop marinas, improve maritime services and promote rural destinations.

At the same time, the government aims to extend the tourism season beyond the summer months. Gonxhja said Albania can achieve this goal by expanding conference tourism, cultural activities, resorts and nature-based experiences.

Additionally, he called for stronger cooperation between local tourism operators. He said destinations must work together instead of competing, so visitors can enjoy complete travel experiences across Albania.

Finally, Gonxhja highlighted the importance of cross-border tourism. He said Albania should become part of regional Balkan itineraries, allowing international visitors to stay longer and explore several countries during one trip.

Through better cooperation, stronger services and sustainable investments, Albania aims to build a more competitive tourism sector throughout the year.
