Five medieval icons undergo restoration in Korça museum

TIRANA, August 3 – Five icons of outstanding historical and artistic value are undergoing restoration at the National Museum of Medieval Art in Korça. Conservation specialists are carrying out the work to preserve the artworks and extend their lifespan for future generations.

The collection includes a 14th-century icon that experts consider one of the museum’s oldest and most significant pieces. Museum Director Fjoralba Prifti said the icon of the Virgin Mary with Christ is also under study. She noted that the artwork is unusual because it is painted on both sides. Meanwhile, specialists continue photographing the icon, uploading documentation to the museum database, and carrying out consolidation work.

In addition, conservators are cleaning the icons, stabilising the paint layers, and performing controlled interventions to slow damage caused by time and environmental factors. Restoration Laboratory Head Genti Proko said the work also includes treating wooden panels damaged by insects, repairing deteriorated paint layers, removing degraded varnish, and carrying out aesthetic conservation in line with international standards.

The National Museum of Medieval Art continues its conservation programme to protect Albania’s cultural heritage. As a result, the restored icons will return to display in the best possible condition for Albanian and international visitors.
