High Temperatures Drive Surge in Medical Emergencies, Brataj: More Than 500 Daily Visits

Rising temperatures have led to an increase in heat-related health emergencies across Albania. In an interview with Euronews Albania, National Emergency Service Director Skënder Brataj said that emergency teams assisted more than 6,700 people during July who sought help for heat-related health issues. On average, more than 500 emergency visits are being carried out each day, prompting authorities to urge the public to take preventive measures.

“Dehydration and heatstroke are among the main risks. Children should never be left inside parked cars, even for a few minutes. Within just five to ten minutes, the temperature inside a vehicle can rise dramatically, putting their lives in danger,” Brataj said.

People with cardiovascular conditions and other chronic illnesses are among the groups most vulnerable to extreme heat and require extra care during hot weather.

“When blood vessels dilate throughout the body to release heat, the body also loses significant amounts of fluid,” he explained.

Health experts continue to advise the public to stay hydrated, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, especially children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with chronic medical conditions.
