At the end of June, the Municipality of Durres introduced the city’s first public beach, equipped with umbrellas and sun loungers available free of charge for visitors. The initiative has been welcomed by residents, particularly elderly beachgoers who have frequented this stretch of sand along the Taulantia promenade for years.
Despite the positive feedback, local visitors have raised concerns about the lack of cleanliness, waste bins, showers, and public toilets. They argue that these are essential facilities for a public beach intended to serve both residents and tourists.
“The water is clean, but you can see for yourself that the area is not. The municipal workers are not taking care of this place. If it were cleaned regularly, it would be much better,” one beachgoer said.
“I think the public beach is a great idea. I came from Italy, and it’s nice that the sun loungers are free. The only issue is the litter. It should be cleaned more often,” another visitor said.
“These are the current conditions, but for the beach to be truly suitable, it needs showers and public toilets. These facilities also help maintain cleanliness. The free umbrellas are a positive step, but there is still work to be done,” another resident added.
The public beach is attracting not only residents of Durres but also foreign tourists, who view the free umbrellas and sun loungers as a positive initiative. However, improving cleanliness and adding basic amenities remain the main priorities for making the beach more functional and attractive during the tourist season.
