Islands highlights Albania as Europe’s hidden gem of wild nature, stunning coasts and ancient history

TIRANA, August 5 – The American travel magazine “Islands” has presented Albania as a rising destination where wild landscapes, breathtaking coastlines and thousands of years of history come together.

Writing for “Islands”, Rebecca High described Albania as a lesser-known Balkan country that is increasingly attracting visitors from North America. She noted that the country is gaining attention as tourists look beyond overcrowded destinations in Western Europe.

The article highlights Albania’s diverse attractions, from the Albanian Riviera and the Albanian Alps, part of a UNESCO-recognized area, to Cold War landmarks and underwater sites with ancient shipwrecks, caves and passages.

Meanwhile, tourism growth has transformed many historic areas and created thousands of jobs. According to the World Tourism Forum Institute, Albania welcomed around 11.7 million foreign visitors in 2024, nearly double the figure recorded three years earlier.

The magazine also presents Tirana as a vibrant capital where colourful buildings, communist-era architecture, cultural spaces and a growing culinary scene attract visitors. It describes the Albanian Riviera as a Mediterranean treasure with crystal-clear waters, hidden bays and dramatic cliffs.

In addition, “Islands” highlights the Albanian Alps as a quieter alternative to more crowded mountain destinations in Europe. The article focuses on Theth, Valbona, Gjirokastra and Berat as key places where visitors can experience nature, traditions and cultural heritage.

The publication also mentions Albania’s historical transformation, from decades of isolation under the communist regime to its current role as a NATO member and a candidate country for European Union membership.

As tourism continues to expand, “Islands” notes that Albania faces the challenge of balancing economic development with the protection of its natural and cultural assets.
