TIRANA, August 5 – Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Democratic League of Kosova (LDK) leader Lumir Abdixhiku failed to reach a political agreement during their meeting on August 4. However, both leaders said they will continue negotiations to form Kosova’s new institutions after the June 7 elections.
The meeting lasted more than three hours and took place two days before the constitutive session of the new Assembly. Meanwhile, Kurti said the parties discussed different approaches but reached no agreement. He stressed that any deal must respect the election result and strengthen institutional stability. He also warned that without an agreement, Kosova could face another election.
In addition, Kurti said the talks did not include specific names for the presidency. He repeated his call for a consensus candidate who would represent the Republic rather than political parties. Abdixhiku replied that any candidate who secures 80 parliamentary votes would qualify as a consensus president. He also said the LDK wants a comprehensive agreement covering the Assembly, the government and the presidency.
However, Abdixhiku said the LDK has no interest in the Assembly speaker’s post. He added that the parties could continue negotiations after the Assembly session if needed. Earlier, Kurti invited Democratic Party of Kosova leader Bedri Hamza and Alliance for the Future of Kosova leader Ardian Gjini to separate meetings, but both declined.
