Farmers’ cooperative opens new opportunities in Kolonja

TIRANA, August 5 – Agriculture Minister Andis Salla said the new agricultural cooperative “ARRKO” will create fresh opportunities for farmers in the municipality of Kolonja. The cooperative forms part of a national initiative that encourages farmers to organise around priority agricultural products.

Meanwhile, the cooperative aims to unite local farmers in production, processing and marketing. Members also receive priority support under the National Support Scheme. The government finances eligible agricultural cooperatives at 100%.

In addition, local officials discussed the “Double Your Enterprise” initiative during a meeting in Kolonjë. The programme helps farmers and entrepreneurs expand their businesses, increase processing capacity and strengthen the competitiveness of the agri-food sector. Mayor Erion Isai said the model could also support the reopening of Erseka’s town agricultural collection centre and generate new tourism income.

Salla said more farmers are seeking to join agricultural cooperatives. He added that the Agriculture Ministry continues to assist municipalities with legal procedures, cooperative models and investment planning. According to the minister, farmers can also access support through the Albanian Development Fund, the National Support Scheme, the IPARD programme and other financial instruments.

Finally, Salla highlighted the “Double Your Enterprise” programme. It offers sovereign guarantees, financing of up to €2 million and state-backed collateral coverage. He said the programme will help businesses expand operations and create greater added value in agriculture.
