First firefighting aircraft joins wildfire operations

TIRANA, August 5 – Prime Minister Edi Rama shared images today from wildfire operations across Albania. He highlighted the deployment of the country’s first firefighting aircraft and praised the crews working on the front line.

Rama said the aircraft has begun operations as an additional firefighting asset during the challenging month of August. Meanwhile, he said Albania is better prepared than ever to respond to wildfires. However, he warned that extreme fires could still exceed national response capacities, as they have in several European countries.

In addition, the prime minister expressed gratitude to all emergency personnel involved in the operations.

According to the Media and Information Agency (MIA), authorities reported 14 wildfire outbreaks during the past 12 hours. Five fires remain active. Emergency teams continue suppression efforts with 182 operational personnel, 19 fire engines, three Air Force helicopters and one Air Force firefighting aircraft.

Meanwhile, crews are operating in the Mount Dajti area, the village of Riban in Mallakastër, Shqiponja in Prrenjas, Vërzhezha in Skrapar, Krekëz in Himara, and the mountainous area between Stegopull and Selcka in the municipalities of Libohova and Dropull.

Civil protection authorities continue to monitor the situation and coordinate operations to contain and extinguish the remaining active fires.
