TIRANA, August 7 – Prime Minister Edi Rama said Albania has a clear path toward European Union membership in an interview with the Financial Times, which examined the European Union’s renewed enlargement agenda.
Rama said the country is in one of the strongest positions in its modern history. He added that Albania now has a clear roadmap toward joining the European Union. According to the newspaper, Albania has accelerated reforms and started closing its first negotiating chapters.
Meanwhile, the Financial Times says geopolitical tensions have revived support for enlargement across Europe. The newspaper notes that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine shifted enlargement from an economic policy to a strategic security priority.
At the same time, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa have described enlargement as one of the European Union’s greatest success stories. They say the policy offers peace, stability and opportunity, also calling enlargement a strategic choice.
However, the newspaper says some European governments remain cautious. They continue to debate the pace of enlargement and the Union’s capacity to admit new members.
Meanwhile, European Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has said enlargement now serves both political and security goals. She argues that the policy will strengthen Europe in an increasingly uncertain international environment.
The Financial Times also highlighted Albania among the countries making steady progress in the accession process. It said the country’s reform agenda has advanced alongside that of other leading candidates.
