TIRANA, August 10 – Albania faces a high wildfire risk this afternoon and tomorrow, with temperatures reaching 40°C. The Institute of Geosciences (IGJEO) has placed 5 counties under a high-risk warning for forest fires.
The warning covers Lezha, Durrës, Tirana, Elbasan and Fier. IGJEO expects a moderate risk in Shkodër, Kukës, Dibër, Berat, Vlora, Gjirokastër and Korça. Meanwhile, the high-risk areas remain localised in southwestern Shkodër, central Kukës, southwestern Dibër, northeastern Korçë and northwestern Berat. The institute expects the risk to peak tomorrow.
Weather conditions will add to the pressure. Light local rain may fall this afternoon in Korça, Vlora and Gjirokastër. The rest of the country should remain dry, while Tuesday should bring no rain.
Temperatures will range from 23°C to 35°C along the coast, from 22°C to 39°C in lowland areas and from 16°C to 34°C in mountainous areas. Winds will remain light to moderate, but they may strengthen along the coast and in mountain areas, adding another challenge to fire response.
