TIRANA, August 12 – The night of August 12 will bring one of the summer’s most spectacular astronomical events. The Perseid meteor shower will peak overnight. People can also observe the phenomenon with the naked eye.
The peak will occur during the night between August 12 and 13. Meanwhile, viewing conditions in Tirana will be particularly good this year. The new Moon will leave the sky relatively dark. People away from city lights will therefore have a better view of the meteors.
No telescope or special equipment is needed. Find a dark location and look towards the sky. Allow your eyes about 20–30 minutes to adjust to the darkness.
The best viewing time will be after midnight. The period from around 02:00 to 05:00 will offer particularly good conditions before dawn.
The Perseids form as Earth passes through the trail of particles left by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. When these particles enter Earth’s atmosphere at very high speed, they burn up. This process creates the bright streaks that appear in the sky as meteors.
