Hasan Prishtina, advocate of liberation and national unity

TIRANA, August 14 – Hasan Prishtina died in Thessaloniki on August 14 after an assassination attempt. Born in Vushtrri, Kosova, in 1873, he studied at the French High School in Thessaloniki and the Ottoman administration school Mulkiye in Istanbul.

Prishtina served three times as a deputy in the Ottoman Parliament. Alongside Ismail Qemali, he helped initiate the General Anti-Ottoman Uprising. He later served as a minister in the Provisional Government of Vlora. In 1913, he helped organise the September uprising against Serbian rule. In 1918, he became a member of the Committee for the National Defence of Kosova.

In 1921, Prishtina became a deputy for Dibër in Albania’s National Council. The High Council then tasked him with forming a government on December 7, 1921. During 1922-23, he emerged as a leading opposition figure in Albania.

Meanwhile, in 1924, Prishtina led the armed resistance movement in Kosova against Serbian rule. He also helped prepare Albania’s June Revolution. He returned to Tirana that year but left Albania in 1925 and lived in exile until his death.

After the assassination, Prishtina was buried in Thessaloniki. Albania brought his remains back in 1977 and reburied him with a state ceremony at the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Kukës.
