The “Marubi” National Museum of Photography in Shkodër has revived the historic collaboration between Gjon Mili and Pablo Picasso after more than seven decades.
Mili met Picasso in Vallauris in 1949. He then proposed an innovative idea. Picasso would draw in the air with light. Mili would capture the movement with a long exposure.
The technique created striking images of centaurs, abstract figures and other shapes. The drawings lasted only seconds. Mili’s photographs made them permanent.
The collaboration brought painting, photography, movement and time together.
Now, the “Marubi” museum presents this story through the exhibition “Gjon Mili: Retrospektivë”.
The exhibition features a rare Presentation Album from 1950. Mili created the album for the exhibition “Photographs of Picasso by Gjon Mili and Robert Capa” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The album includes some of Mili’s most famous photographs of Picasso. It also features the renowned “Light Drawings” series.
The album carries the name of Alexander Liberman. He served as artistic director of Condé Nast and played an influential role in American visual culture.
Mili signed and dated the album on May 19, 1950. He also dedicated it to Liberman. The album therefore documents Mili’s professional relationships within the international art world.
It also preserves an important chapter in modern photography. The object connects art, photography, museums and international publishing.
The exhibition shows Mili not only as Picasso’s photographer. It also presents him as an important figure in the international cultural scene of the 20th century.
The “Gjon Mili: Retrospektivë” exhibition opened on June 12. Howard Greenberg curated the exhibition with support from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport.
