TIRANA, August 18 – Tourist numbers in Shkodër region have risen significantly this summer. The increase has created new challenges for local institutions. Authorities are focusing on visitor safety and service quality.
For the Regional Administration of Protected Areas in Shkodër, visitor safety remains a key concern. The focus has particularly turned to mountain areas. Officials are working to improve visitor guidance and make movement through mountainous terrain safer.
Agim Dardha, head of the Regional Administration of Protected Areas in Shkodër, said more tourists now use licensed guides following repeated safety appeals. As a result, the region has recorded fewer incidents in the Albanian Alps. He also urged visitors to exercise caution on unmarked mountain trails.
Meanwhile, growing visitor numbers in Velipoja and Lake Shkodër are creating additional demands. Shkodër Municipality has made territorial maintenance and service quality priorities. Renato Lumçi, director of tourism at Shkodër Municipality, said authorities have increased cleaning intervals in tourist areas. He also stressed the need to improve service quality as visitor numbers rise.
More than 570,000 visitors travelled to tourist areas across Shkodër region during the first 7 months of 2026. The Albanian Alps National Park recorded the highest number of visitors. Theth remains the leading tourist destination in northern Albania.
