Kosova acting President Haxhiu: No agreement on president could lead to new elections

TIRANA, August 18 – Acting President of Kosova Albulena Haxhiu said the country could face new elections. She linked this possibility to the lack of an agreement on the next president.

Haxhiu said political leaders should discuss specific names for a consensus candidate. She added that acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti would soon start talks with the Democratic League of Kosova on the candidate.

Meanwhile, Haxhiu said Kurti told the meeting that he had the votes to elect the speaker of parliament. He also said he had the votes to form a government. However, Haxhiu stressed that the parties still need an agreement on the president.

In addition, Haxhiu said she was reviewing documents from political parties on new appointments to the Central Election Commission. She also addressed calls for protests from the former opposition. Haxhiu said those planning protests should state clearly what they seek.
