TIRANA, August 19 – Cultural and religious heritage sites have attracted strong interest from domestic and foreign tourists in Gjirokastër County this year. Churches, mosques, cultural monuments and historical sites have featured prominently in tourist itineraries. As a result, cultural and religious tourism has become one of the area’s main attractions.
According to the Regional Directorate of National Culture, visitor numbers have increased across the southern region. The rise also reflects growing interest in Përmet. Among the most visited religious sites are the Labova of the Cross, the Bazaar Mosque and Leusa Church in Përmet. Their historical and architectural value has contributed to their popularity, the director of Cultural Heritage in Gjirokastër, Ardis Duka, said.
Meanwhile, the authorities attribute the increase to stronger promotion of cultural heritage sites and completed restoration projects. Tourist guides have also included more of these locations. In addition, government investment has supported tourism in the area, particularly around the Bënjë Thermal Baths. The site combines natural and cultural heritage through its thermal waters, the Kadiu Bridge, Bënjë village and its church.
Cultural and religious heritage remains an important asset for tourism development and for preserving the area’s historical identity.
