The Independent: Albania Among 10 European Countries Outside the EES System for 2026 Holidays

Albania is among 10 European countries that are not required to apply the new Entry/Exit System (EES) during the 2026 holiday season, British newspaper The Independent reports.

Travel across Europe may become more complicated this year as the new biometric border system expands. The EES requires travelers to provide biometric data, including fingerprints and facial images, when they first enter the Schengen Area.

The system has faced challenges at several border crossings. Long queues have raised concerns about staffing levels at airports and the time needed to complete the new checks.

Some travelers have reportedly spent several hours waiting at border crossings. In the worst cases, waits of up to five hours can turn a short European trip into a less pleasant experience.

However, several European countries do not have to apply the EES because they are not part of the Schengen free-movement area.

Albania

The Independent describes Albania as one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. The country has emerged as a more affordable alternative to destinations such as Greece and Croatia.

The Albanian Riviera offers beaches with turquoise waters and white sand. Ksamil and Himara remain among the country’s best-known coastal destinations.

Albania also offers attractions beyond the coast. Visitors can explore the Albanian Alps, including the 15-kilometre Qafa e Valbonës route, which features dramatic mountain scenery and limestone peaks.

The capital, Tirana, offers another option for travelers. Visitors can explore the city’s colorful architecture, which reflects Ottoman, communist-era and modern influences, including contemporary landmarks such as Downtown One.

The other nine countries listed by The Independent are Cyprus, Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Kosovo, Serbia and the United Kingdom.
