Albania’s beekeeping sector reaches 645,000 hives with thousands receiving support

TIRANA, August 20 – Albania’s beekeeping sector continues to show potential for development, with 7,016 beekeepers applying for support under the 2026 National Scheme. The Agency for Agricultural and Rural Development said the number followed a change in the funding threshold for beekeeping support. Data for 2025 show that Albania produced 6,299 tonnes of honey, while the number of hives reached 645,000 nationwide.

Meanwhile, government support for the sector has also expanded the number of beneficiaries. Under the 2025 National Scheme, 4,135 beekeepers received support. According to the agency, the strong interest in the 2026 scheme shows that beekeeping remains an economic activity with potential for expansion, particularly in rural areas.

In addition, the increased number of applications is intended to support the development of beekeeping farms, expand production capacity and improve the sector’s sustainability. Beekeeping also supports agriculture through crop pollination and biodiversity conservation. Honey production remains a traditional activity in Albania’s rural economy.

With 645,000 hives, thousands of active beekeepers and annual honey production of more than 6,200 tonnes, the sector has further growth potential. Financial support schemes are also contributing to its development.
