The Academy of Sciences of Albania has commemorated academician Bahri Beci on the anniversary of his death.
Beci died on August 20, 2023. Born in Shkodër in 1936, he began his scientific career in 1958 at the Institute of Linguistics and Literature.
Soon after, he became involved in major research projects. He later held several leadership positions at the institute, including department head, project director, scientific secretary and director.
Meanwhile, Beci continued to develop his academic career abroad. In Paris, he earned his doctorate with a study of the vowel and consonant system of the Shkodër dialect.
After returning to Tirana, he completed further research on central and northwestern Albanian dialects. In particular, his work focused on the dialects of Shkodër and Dibër.
Furthermore, Beci contributed to the study of Albanian phonetics and the history of Albanian dialects. He also examined the position of Albanian within the Balkan linguistic area.
His academic work extended beyond Albania. He taught and conducted research at institutions including the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO) in Paris.
In 2008, Beci became a member of the Academy of Sciences of Albania. He also served as a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo and as a member of the editorial board of the Atlas Linguarum Europae.
Moreover, Beci played a role in the 1972 Congress of Orthography. He participated as a delegate and signed its resolution. He later authored two major studies on the standardization of modern literary Albanian.
Through decades of research, Beci strengthened the study of Albanian dialects, phonetics and language development. Therefore, his work remains an important part of contemporary Albanian linguistics.
His legacy continues through the research, publications and institutions that preserve and develop the study of the Albanian language.
