TIRANA, August 24 – Ukraine marks 35 years of independence today, with Ambassador Volodymyr Shkurov stressing the country’s long struggle to defend its sovereignty and European choice.
In a message marking the anniversary, Shkurov recalled that Ukraine declared independence on August 24, 1991. He said more than 90% of voters confirmed that choice in a nationwide referendum on December 1 that year. He described independence as an ongoing process of strengthening the state, democracy and citizens’ rights.
Meanwhile, the ambassador highlighted Albania’s support for Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. He thanked the Albanian people and government, as well as Prime Minister Edi Rama, President Bajram Begaj, Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi and Foreign Minister Ferit Hoxha for their support.
Earlier, Shkurov noted that he opened the Ukrainian Embassy in Tirana in February 2021. He recalled celebrating Ukraine’s 30th independence anniversary in Tirana that August, before the war transformed the meaning of independence.
At the same time, he said Ukraine continues to defend its territory and prepare for reconstruction, the return of its people and European Union membership. Shkurov said Ukrainians remain committed to freedom, European integration and a just peace.
He concluded that the Ukrainian people chose this path themselves and expressed confidence that it would lead to victory, peace and Ukraine’s place in a united Europe.
