TIRANA, August 24 – Acting President of Kosova Albulena Haxhiu presented citizenship decrees to former U.S. Congressman Joe DioGuardi and his wife, Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi, at a special ceremony.
DioGuardi, the first Albanian-American voting member of the U.S. Congress, has been one of the strongest voices in Washington in support of the people of Kosova and its independence. His father came to the United States from Greci, an Arbëresh-speaking village near Naples, where his family had Albanian roots.
Meanwhile, Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi has also worked for decades to promote the rights of Albanians and support the cause of Kosova. Together, the couple have played a prominent role in raising Albanian and Kosova issues in the United States.
The citizenship decision recognises their long-standing support for Kosova and its independence.
