Begaj: Remembering Communist Persecution Is a Responsibility for Future Generations

President Bajram Begaj has called for stronger efforts to preserve the memory of the victims of Albania’s communist regime.

During a visit to Lushnjë, Begaj paid tribute to people who suffered political persecution and internment. He laid flowers at the Memorial of Political Persecution and visited the former internment camp in Savër, one of the largest such sites in Albania.

Begaj said remembering the victims is not only about looking at the past. Instead, he described historical memory as a responsibility to younger generations and a lesson for the future.

He also called for institutions to document personal testimonies, preserve photographs, digitize historical records and protect former sites of persecution. According to Begaj, these places can help younger generations understand the consequences of totalitarianism.

The President also visited the exhibition “Dignity in the Face of Totalitarianism”, which documents the lives of people who experienced internment.

Begaj stressed that Albania must preserve this history while continuing to build a democratic, European and humane society that does not forget the suffering of its past.
