TIRANA, August 25 – Former US Congressman Joe DioGuardi has urged Kosova’s parliamentary parties to elect the country’s president. He warned that failure to do so could create major problems for Kosova and affect stability in the Balkans. DioGuardi made the remarks after receiving Kosova citizenship.
DioGuardi said he had come to Kosova to raise public awareness about the importance of electing a president. He also warned that Kosova faces opponents who are ready to disrupt the balance in the Balkans. He said the current situation requires political action rather than inaction.
Meanwhile, Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi, a former activist for the Kosova cause and DioGuardi’s wife, welcomed their new citizenship. She highlighted the work of Albanian-Americans since 1989 and said DioGuardi had exposed the repression of Kosova Albanians under Slobodan Milosevic.
Acting Kosova President Albulena Haxhiu said DioGuardi and Cloyes had been among the strongest voices in the United States in support of Kosova and its independence. Earlier, she had presented them with their citizenship decrees at a special ceremony. The couple has supported Kosova through lobbying in the United States, raising international awareness of rights violations, advocating for NATO intervention during the 1998–1999 war and later promoting Kosova’s international recognition and independence.
