Albania Strengthens Protection for Local Products

Albania is taking steps to give traditional and locally made products greater value in domestic and European markets through stronger geographical protection.

A new legal framework aims to protect the names, quality and reputation of products linked to specific regions. The initiative forms part of Albania’s industrial property reform and supports the country’s EU integration process.

Under the proposed rules, producer groups could register geographical indicators and define the production methods and characteristics that connect a product to its territory. The system would also help prevent unauthorized use and imitation.

For small businesses and artisans, geographical indicators could provide a stronger competitive advantage. They can help producers highlight the authenticity and origin of their products while increasing their reputation and added value.

Moreover, the initiative could support local economies by connecting traditional production with cultural tourism and regional development.

The new framework also aligns Albania with EU rules on geographical indications for craft and industrial products. As a result, Albanian producers could gain a clearer path toward protecting and promoting their products in European markets.

However, legal protection alone cannot guarantee commercial success. Producers will also need to maintain quality standards, meet market requirements and promote their products effectively.

Overall, the initiative aims to turn Albania’s local traditions and regional identity into stronger economic value and greater international competitiveness.
