TIRANA, August 25 – Albania faces growing pollution and road-safety risks from its ageing vehicle fleet, according to the World Bank. The country’s motorization rate has increased by 122% over the past 10 years.
Of the vehicles registered in Albania, 91% are more than 10 years old. The rest have exceeded 20 years of age. Older vehicles increase fuel consumption and economic costs. They also contribute to air pollution and affect road safety.
Meanwhile, Albania needs measures to renew its vehicle fleet and promote electric vehicles. Authorities also need to strengthen public transport and improve road safety.
Korca is already taking steps to remove ageing vehicles from circulation. Around 220 vehicles, mostly more than 20 years old, were permanently deregistered last year. Specialists expect the measure to improve air quality and road safety.
Replacing older vehicles with newer ones can help create cleaner and safer transport. The process can also contribute to a cleaner and more liveable city.
