TIRANA, August 25 – Epidemiologist Adela Vasili of the Institute of Public Health said West Nile fever spreads only through infected mosquitoes and not from person to person. She discussed the main symptoms after Albania confirmed its first case in Korça.
Meanwhile, Vasili said authorities have confirmed no other suspected or confirmed cases in Albania. She added that a disinfection programme targets mosquitoes and helps reduce the risk. At the same time, she urged citizens to eliminate stagnant water and follow mosquito-control measures. According to Vasili, coastal areas face the highest risk.
Regarding the case in Korça, Vasili said the patient initially sought medical care and later entered hospital treatment after the condition worsened. She explained that the disease initially causes symptoms similar to mild flu. However, people over 60, those with weakened immune systems, and those who have undergone transplants or major medical procedures may develop more severe forms.
