Domestic electricity production increased by 34.4%, while exports rose by 55.4% in the second quarter of the year. Lower imports improved the country’s energy balance, although consumption and energy losses remain a challenge.

Domestic electricity production increased by 34.4% in the second quarter of 2026, while exports expanded by 55.4%. At the same time, imports fell by 21%, bringing the net energy exchange to a surplus of around 422 GWh. However, rising consumption and the still-high level of energy losses remain two factors requiring attention.

Albania ended the second quarter of the year with a more positive energy balance, driven mainly by increased domestic production and lower imports. According to INSTAT data, available energy increased by 5.1%, reaching around 1.94 million MWh, compared with 1.84 million MWh in the same period of 2025.

The most notable change was in domestic production. Net electricity production reached 2,361 GWh, up from 1,757 GWh a year earlier, marking an increase of 34.4%. This performance significantly improved the ratio between electricity generated domestically and electricity supplied through imports.

Hydropower plants remain the main source of domestic electricity generation. They produced 1,913 GWh in the second quarter, compared with 1,468 GWh during the same period last year.

Public hydropower plants made the largest contribution to the increase, with production reaching 1,010 GWh, up from 704 GWh a year earlier — an increase of 43.6%. Private and concession-operated hydropower plants also recorded growth. Their production reached 903 GWh, compared with 765 GWh in the second quarter of 2025, representing an 18% increase.

Meanwhile, electricity generation from other renewable energy sources rose significantly, reaching 448 GWh, compared with 288 GWh a year earlier. This represents an increase of 55.6%.
