TIRANA, August 27 – The Vjosa River National Park, one of Albania’s most important natural assets, has faced several threats identified through monitoring and management of the area.
Waste dumping has remained among the main concerns. It has damaged the landscape and polluted the environment, while also threatening the river ecosystem and its biodiversity. Eduina Guga, director of the administrative office of Vjosa National Park, also identified water pollution from business and urban discharges as a threat. Damage to riverbanks has also occurred, including from flood protection activities.
Meanwhile, park authorities have taken measures according to the nature and seriousness of each case. Guga said the administration had initially focused on raising awareness and informing local residents. However, authorities have followed legal procedures in more serious cases and worked with other institutions, including the police, the National Inspectorate of Territorial Protection and the relevant ministry.
Protecting the Vjosa requires more than institutional action. It also depends on public involvement, particularly in an area where the natural environment remains a key asset.
