Brazilian magazine “Estado de Minas” has highlighted one of Albania’s most remarkable natural wonders: Lake Neuron in the Vjosa Valley.
The underground thermal lake lies near Përmet and the Bënjë thermal springs. It holds around 8.3 million liters of water. The magazine described Lake Neuron as a hidden treasure beneath Albania’s mountains. Czech scientists discovered the lake a year ago.
According to the article, researchers consider Neuron the largest known underground thermal lake in the world.
The cave impresses not only with its huge volume of water but also with its size. During a 2024 expedition, researchers used LIDAR technology to map the cave.
The mapping revealed that the lake measures 138 meters long and 42 meters wide. It also contains approximately 8.3 million liters of thermal water.
Meanwhile, Përmet offers another attraction for visitors. The small southern Albanian town sits among mountains and the Vjosa River valley. The area is known for its stunning landscapes and thermal springs.
As a result, the discovery of Lake Neuron adds another major natural attraction to a region already known for its unique landscape and thermal waters.
