Ministry of Defence: 22 wildfires reported in 24 hours, 3 remain active

TIRANA, August 28 – Authorities reported 22 wildfires across Albania over the past 24 hours. Three remain active, while four others remain under monitoring. The Ministry of Defence said 288 operational personnel and 21 firefighting vehicles have joined the response. The Armed Forces also deployed two helicopters, which took part in three operations.

The active fires are burning on Mount Dajti in Tirana, in Vajkal in Bulqiza and in Sllatina in Dibër. On Mount Dajti, firefighters and protected-area staff continue efforts above the Qafë-Molla tunnels, with 20 personnel and an Armed Forces helicopter involved. In Vajkal, 40 local and volunteer personnel are fighting a fire in scrub and juniper on rocky terrain. Wind has increased the risk of spreading the flames, prompting the deployment of a helicopter and 20 additional Armed Forces personnel. Authorities said the fire poses no threat to populated areas.

In Sllatine, 46 personnel are fighting a fire in a beech forest. Authorities have also deployed a helicopter because the flames could spread towards pine forests. Four other fires remain under monitoring in Qafë-Helmës and Arrmollë in Dibër Municipality, and in Mount Dardha and Mount Qukës in Elbasan Municipality. Authorities said the fires remain under control or isolated and pose no threat to populated areas.

The National Civil Protection Agency continues to monitor the situation across the country in coordination with local authorities and civil protection structures. Operational teams remain on the ground and on standby, with priority given to protecting lives, homes and property.
