FM Hoxha: Destabilising Montenegro is not in Albania’s interest

TIRANA, August 28 – Albania’s Foreign Minister Ferit Hoxha has rejected suggestions that Albanian officials took part in coordinated hybrid activities in Montenegro. He stressed that no formal accusation has been made against Albania.

FM Hoxha responded after Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajic referred to the alleged involvement of officials from “at least two countries in the region”. He said media reports had produced different interpretations and called for caution. Albania, he stressed, should not become part of unnecessary controversy.

The foreign minister stressed that Albania “neither is nor can be part” of any destabilising scenario in Montenegro. He described Montenegro as a neighbouring country, friend, partner and NATO ally. He also noted that both countries share the goal of European Union membership.

Meanwhile, FM Hoxha said Albania has consistently pursued the opposite approach. He pointed to its efforts to promote regional cooperation, stability and development. He also highlighted wider European and Euro-Atlantic cooperation.

FM Hoxha said Tirana remains in regular contact with Montenegrin authorities. He referred to communications with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ervin Ibrahimovic and Deputy Prime Minister Nik Gjeloshaj. He urged political actors in Albania to avoid turning foreign policy into an instrument of domestic political debate. He said foreign policy requires calm, restraint and responsibility.
