Traditional Labëria music is reaching a new generation. For the third year in a row, musician Vendim Kapaj will offer a free fyell course in Vlora. The course will run from September 2026 to July 2027. It will teach the fyell and other traditional instruments.
Young people from across southern Albania have already shown strong interest. This year, participants will also come from Tirana.
“This is the third year of the free fyell course. Interest has grown even more this year. Some participants will come from Tirana, including several girls. Most come from Tepelena, Vlora, Kurvelesh, and nearby areas,” Kapaj told ATA.
The course will also introduce participants to instruments such as the cylja dyjare, bilbili, xhamba, and pipizana.
Kapaj has also gained international attention through cinema. He performed as a fyell soloist on the soundtrack of “The Odyssey”, directed by Christopher Nolan. Composer Ludwig Göransson created the film’s music.
The production brought the sound of the Albanian fyell to international audiences. Kapaj believes this exposure helped increase interest in his course.
“It is a pleasure to see young people wanting to learn and continue this tradition,” he said.
Through the free course, Kapaj aims to preserve Albania’s traditional instruments and music. He also wants young musicians to carry Labëria’s musical heritage into the future.
The fyell continues to connect Albanian tradition with new generations and international audiences.
