After a prolonged political crisis and three repeated election processes, Vetëvendosje (VV) and the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) have reached an agreement to unblock the process of electing the President of Kosovo.
The two parties have agreed to put forward a joint candidate, proposing former ambassador Bekim Sejdiu for the post of President of the Republic.
The agreement between the two political parties comes after months of disputes and failed attempts to secure the necessary consensus in Parliament. The institutional crisis had led the country to repeat elections on three occasions, while the election of the head of state had become the main point of political deadlock.
Former ambassador Bekim Sejdiu, who has experience in diplomacy and international relations, is expected to be the candidate for whom VV and LDK will seek the support of MPs in Parliament.
The political agreement is now expected to be formalized in Parliament, where it will become clear whether the two parties can secure the necessary votes to elect the President.
Following three election cycles and a prolonged political crisis, the agreement between VV and LDK aims to end the institutional deadlock and pave the way for the normal functioning of Kosovo’s institutions.
Bekim Sejdiu is therefore expected to emerge as the compromise candidate who could bring the presidential crisis to an end and restore institutional stability in Kosovo.
