Today marks one year since the death of People’s Artist Dhimitër Anagnosti (1936–2025), one of the most influential figures in Albanian cinema.
Born in Vuno, Himara, Anagnosti graduated in cinematography from the Moscow Film Institute in 1960.
He began his career as a cinematographer at the “New Albania” Film Studio. There, he worked on acclaimed films such as “Debatik,” “Our Land,” and “The Commissioner of Light.”
In 1967, Anagnosti made his directorial debut with “Silent Duel.” He then created a series of films that gave Albanian cinema a distinctive identity.
His major works include “Old Wounds,” “Mountains Covered in Green,” “Poppies on the Walls,” “A Tale from the Past,” “The Return of the Dead Army,” and “Gjoleka, the Son of Abaz.”
“Poppies on the Walls,” released in 1976, remains one of his greatest achievements. The film also ranks among the most acclaimed works in Albanian cinema.
Beyond directing and cinematography, Anagnosti also worked as a screenwriter and playwright. In 2001, he wrote and staged the play “A Night of Knocks on the Window” at the National Theatre.
Throughout his career, Anagnosti received numerous national and international awards. His achievements included the Republic Award, prizes at Albanian film festivals, and international recognition.
Anagnosti died in 2025, leaving behind a valuable artistic legacy. Today, his films continue to preserve an important chapter of Albania’s cultural and cinematic history.
