Kosova, Acting PM Kurti: Presidential agreement stands despite six Democratic League MPs’ opposition

TIRANA, September 2 – Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti said the agreement between the Self-Determination Movement and the Democratic League of Kosova on the presidential nomination remains in place despite six Democratic League lawmakers opposing Bekim Sejdiu’s candidacy.

After a meeting of the Self-Determination parliamentary group, Kurti said all 53 of its lawmakers supported the agreement. He added that the opposition from six Democratic League lawmakers required further talks with party leader Lumir Abdixhiku. Kurti accused the six lawmakers of seeking new parliamentary elections.

Meanwhile, Abdixhiku said the six lawmakers had failed to respect the party leadership’s decision. He confirmed that he had 12 Democratic League lawmakers available for the presidential vote and said he would continue efforts to secure the required numbers. The six opposing lawmakers include Avdullah Hoti, Hykmete Bajrami, Arben Gashi, Armend Zemaj, Kujtim Shala and Janina Ymeri.

The Democratic League leadership had unanimously approved Sejdiu’s nomination and called on its lawmakers to support him. However, the six lawmakers said they opposed the agreement with Kurti and did not want to extend his political power. The presidential vote requires at least 80 lawmakers to be present in the 120-seat Assembly. The Democratic Party of Kosova and Alliance have also said they will not support Sejdiu.
