Albania is quickly emerging as a top destination for autumn holidays. The country offers beaches, history, hospitality and affordable prices.
British travel expert Simon Calder has highlighted Albania for its natural beauty, reasonable prices and the warm hospitality of its people. He described the country as “absolutely wonderful.”
Calder selected Albania as one of the best options for an affordable autumn trip. In particular, he praised the strong value it offers for money, according to Vita Molyneux in an article published by the British newspaper “Daily Express.”
The travel expert said the European destination won his heart as early as the 1980s.
Although Albania has now become an important tourist destination, prices remain relatively affordable, with some costs still comparable to levels seen in the mid-1990s.
Albania has rapidly gained attention as a must-visit destination. However, Calder discovered the country long before it became a global tourism trend.
He recalled his experience during an appearance on ITV’s “This Morning” in 2024. Calder spoke with presenters Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley from his hotel in Durrës, confirming that he had arrived the previous evening.
“The sun has come out, it is absolutely wonderful, and it is one of the most historic and beautiful cities in Albania,” he told the presenters.
Beyond its impressive landscapes, Calder also praised Albania’s low prices.
A pizza and a beer can cost around £6. Meanwhile, a bus from the airport to his hotel, a journey of about 30 miles, cost only a few pounds. He added that he would have taken the bus if he had not missed the last service.
Fortunately, local hospitality made up for the inconvenience.
Calder said that once locals realized he had missed the bus, they immediately stepped in to help. They arranged a taxi and made sure he knew exactly how much he should pay, helping him avoid being overcharged.
He also noted that Albania remains largely outside the traditional package-tour market. However, he expects major tour operators to discover its potential in the coming years.
Flights to Albania operate daily from major airports across the United Kingdom. As a result, British travelers can reach the country in around three hours.
So, is it time to add Albania to your travel list?
For visitors who, like Calder, choose Durrës, the city offers plenty of attractions.
Durrës is famous for its impressive Roman amphitheatre. The site features well-preserved mosaics that visitors can explore and admire.
TripAdvisor has also given the attraction high praise. One visitor described it as a place that everyone should visit.
Meanwhile, travelers looking for a traditional beach holiday can also find plenty to enjoy in Durrës.
The coastal city offers a long stretch of sandy shoreline, with bright beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters.
With history, seaside attractions, affordable prices and warm hospitality, Albania continues to strengthen its position as an attractive autumn destination for British travelers.
