The number of cars entering Albania for the first time is declining. In August, around 8,100 vehicles were registered, 10% fewer than in August last year, while the number of vehicles on the road in Albania has grown at a slower pace compared with the past two years.
The slowdown in imports has been particularly noticeable since March, while transportation costs have also affected vehicles coming from Asian markets.
South Korea and China continue to be the main countries of origin for imported vehicles. In the first eight months of the year, around 17,500 vehicles came from South Korea, while more than 10,600 were registered from China.
Meanwhile, Germany and Italy, which once dominated the Albanian market, now rank behind them, with 7,900 and 7,700 vehicles respectively.
Another trend is the rise in electric vehicles. More than 7,000 were registered in the first eight months of the year, 2.5 times more than during the same period last year. Electric vehicles now account for 10.6% of new registrations.
The market has also seen an increase in Chinese electric cars, which have reached 7% of registrations, while Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz continue to lead the market.
During the January-August period, around 66,500 vehicles were registered for the first time in Albania, almost the same level as in the first eight months of last year. Overall, the number of vehicles on the road in Albania reached around 1.1 million by the end of August.
