Euronews Albania’s Instagram Account Shut Down: What Is Happening on Social Media in Albania?

Euronews Albania’s Instagram page is no longer accessible, raising further alarm over what has been happening to Albanian accounts on social media in recent days.

Without any prior notice or warning, Euronews Albania woke up today to find its Instagram page displaying the message: “User not found.”

Just last night, Euronews Albania hosted MEP Sandro Gozi on its “Review” program, where he spoke specifically about the shutdown of Albanian Instagram accounts and called for transparency from Meta.

Gozi raised a straightforward question: What is happening, and why are these accounts being shut down?

The MEP called on Meta to provide a clear explanation as to whether these cases are the result of technical problems, violations of the platform’s rules, or coordinated abuse of its reporting system.

Less than 24 hours after that interview, Euronews Albania itself can no longer access its Instagram page.

This does not prove any connection between the interview and the shutdown of the account, and without an explanation from Meta, any such conclusion would be speculation. However, the case makes the very question raised in the Euronews Albania studio just one night earlier even more relevant.

In recent days, dozens of Albanian Instagram accounts have reportedly been shut down. Meta has acknowledged that some accounts were removed by mistake, has begun reviewing the actions taken, and several profiles have since been restored. However, the company has yet to provide a full explanation of what caused this series of incidents.

The issue now goes beyond a single account.

When a global platform can suddenly cut off an individual, an organization, or even a media outlet operating under an international brand from its audience, without an immediate and understandable explanation, the central issue becomes one of transparency.

Meta must clarify what is happening to Albanian accounts, how the system leading to their shutdown works, whether its reporting mechanisms are being abused, and what safeguards are in place to prevent accounts from being wrongly removed.

Because today, the question Sandro Gozi raised last night on Euronews Albania applies to Euronews Albania itself:

What is happening on Instagram, and why are these accounts being shut down?
