The Electricity Distribution Operator (OSHEE Group) plans to develop a smarter energy grid. General Administrator Mentor Hima said digitalization, smart meters, automation and artificial intelligence will play a key role in this transformation.
Hima presented the vision at the “3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies and Smart Technologies – IEEE REST 2026” in Tirana. OSHEE Group supported the international event.
According to Hima, the energy grid of the future must become not only larger and more reliable, but also smarter. Therefore, infrastructure upgrades must go hand in hand with digitalization, smart metering, automation and artificial intelligence.
The goal is to move from a system that simply reacts to problems to one that can predict them. As a result, the energy system can improve both efficiency and reliability.
Meanwhile, customers will play an increasingly important role in this transformation. Hima said customers no longer act only as consumers. Instead, they are becoming active participants in the energy system and in a market that is becoming more open, flexible and integrated with the European market.
Hima also referred to the new “Energy Law.” He stressed that the legislation further strengthens the customer’s role in relation to services and behavior in the liberalized energy market.
Furthermore, the OSHEE Group administrator highlighted the importance of cooperation between universities, industry and public and private energy operators. He said research and innovation create their full value when they become concrete projects and practical solutions for the energy system.
“Technology will shape the grid of the future, but people will bring it to life and operate it,” Hima said.
At the same time, OSHEE Group continues to invest in infrastructure, technology, human resources and partnerships. Through these efforts, the company aims to build a more modern and reliable energy system that responds better to customer needs and supports Albania’s European integration.
