Following the closing arguments presented by Chief Prosecutor Kimberly West and the prosecutor in the case, the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office in The Hague has requested a six-year prison sentence for former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi in the case concerning obstruction of justice.
“Based on all the evidence and facts, the Prosecution asks you to deliver a judgment that is consistent with the law, the evidence, and the facts. Therefore, guilty on all counts of the indictment, based on the seriousness of the criminal offenses and the totality of the factors to be considered in determining the applicable sentence in this case. The Prosecution asks you to impose the sentences requested: nine months’ imprisonment for Kuçi, three years’ imprisonment for Fazliu, three years’ imprisonment for Kilaj, three years’ imprisonment for Smakaj, and six years’ imprisonment for Thaçi, to be served consecutively to any sentence that may be imposed in Case 6, should such a sentence be imposed,” the Prosecution said.
According to the Prosecution, the charges brought by the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office (SPO), and which the SPO says it has proven beyond a reasonable doubt, constitute crimes.
“They are crimes for a clear reason: attempting to interfere with and obstruct judicial proceedings before this court, which exists here in The Hague precisely because of the extensive history of witness intimidation and interference in Kosovo, poses a threat to the fair and independent administration of justice,” the Prosecution said.
