Prime Minister Edi Rama said today that investors have never asked to buy Sazan Island and that the Albanian state will become a partner in the investment.
Speaking to journalist Rudina Xhunga on the “Flasim Shqip” program, Rama addressed the investment plans for Sazan. He stressed that no one has ever requested to purchase the island.
“Sazan is state-owned land and will remain state-owned,” Rama said.
He added that the government has set another condition. It wants to participate directly in the project as a partner.
“We insisted on becoming partners. We want to establish a joint-stock company in which the Republic of Albania will hold shares. The state will contribute the property and receive shares in the company,” Rama said.
Meanwhile, Rama said negotiations over Sazan have continued for years. The government and investors are still discussing how they will structure their cooperation.
Rama also pointed to the challenges that come with developing the island. He said Sazan has great natural potential but also requires major investment.
“Sazan is a territory that is very beautiful, but also very challenging. For example, the island has mined areas, so it requires demining. It also has no water supply and no electricity,” Rama said.
Therefore, Rama argued that the island cannot simply be viewed as an asset with a fixed value. Investors must also finance the infrastructure needed to develop it.
Rama added that previous governments had also sought to attract investors to Sazan and turn it into a tourism destination.
According to him, the project could significantly strengthen Albania’s international position. He said Sazan and Zvërnec could raise the country’s profile among major investors and attract interest in other sectors.
“Once we have investment in Sazan and Zvërnec, we raise Albania’s level among this category of investors,” Rama said.
He added that interest has grown significantly since Jared Kushner launched the Sazan project. According to Rama, investors have shown interest in technology hubs, artificial intelligence, pharmaceuticals and other sectors.
Rama described this as a potential spillover effect that could bring opportunities beyond tourism.
Meanwhile, Rama said the Zvërnec investment remains at an earlier stage. He stressed that authorities have not yet approved a construction plan or a final project for the area.
