A small but valuable photo collection has joined the Albanian Telegraphic Agency’s (ATA) archives. The collection brings back images of Tirana in February 1991, during one of the most turbulent periods of Albania’s transition from communist rule.
Photographer Petrit Kozeli took the images while working in Tirana. The original photographs capture a city in turmoil. They show crowds in the streets, clashes and military vehicles in key areas of the capital.
Meanwhile, Kozeli’s photographs add new value to ATA’s extensive photographic archive. The agency preserves thousands of images that document important moments in Albania’s history.
Kozeli has lived in Mantova, Italy, for more than three decades. His life took a different path after he left Albania as an emigrant.
In Italy, he became a master shoemaker. In his shop in Mantova, Kozeli created his famous shoes featuring the Albanian and Italian flags. The design became a symbol of coexistence and the shared journey between the two countries.
His work later reached prominent figures. Kozeli presented his shoes to former Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and Pope Francis.
Italy also recognized his contribution by awarding him the title of Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Pope Francis later honored him with the title of Commander of the Order of Saint Sylvester.
Today, Kozeli’s photographs offer a rare visual record of Tirana during a decisive moment in Albania’s modern history.
