Albania marks 60 years since the founding of the Institute of Arts in Tirana. The institution opened on September 15, 1966, bringing together three major arts schools of the time.
The new institution merged the State Conservatory of Tirana, the School of Fine Arts and the Aleksandër Moisiu Higher School of Actors. The merger created a single center for higher arts education, combining music, visual arts and performing arts.
Over the following decades, the Institute of Arts became an important center of artistic education and cultural life in Albania. It trained generations of actors, musicians, directors and painters and produced prominent figures in theatre, music, opera, ballet and visual arts.
In 1990, the Institute of Arts became a university and took the name Academy of Arts. The change expanded its academic role and provided greater scope for research and artistic creation. On March 23, 2011, the Council of Ministers renamed the institution the University of Arts. It retained three faculties covering music, fine arts and performing arts.
