A monumental statue dedicated to Queen Teuta has been installed on the scenic Shëngjin-Velipojë route. The monument adds a new historical, cultural and tourism attraction to the area.
Sculptor Julian Muçollari created the nearly nine-meter-high monument. Journalist Marin Mema inspired the concept. Historian Paulin Zefi, actors from Albanian-speaking territories and the Lezhë Municipal Council also contributed to the project.
Lezhë Mayor Pjerin Ndreu, Shkodër Mayor Benet Beci, historian Paulin Zefi, journalist Marin Mema, researchers and local residents attended the inauguration ceremony.
“Facing the Adriatic, Teuta returns as a symbol of our history, identity and pride. Lezhë now has another reason to visit,” Ndreu said.
He added that the monument combines the area’s natural beauty with its historical heritage and creates a new tourism asset.
Meanwhile, Beci highlighted the broader regional connection between Shkodër, Ulcinj, Lezhë, Durrës and the Adriatic coast. He said the route now represents not only a shared history but also an opportunity for tourism, cooperation and development.
Historian Paulin Zefi called for similar initiatives in other Albanian cities. He said they could honor other important Illyrian kings and queens.
Journalist Marin Mema also called for more monuments dedicated to Albania’s historical heritage.
“I hope this will be only the first step in a series of monuments that we must build to preserve our heritage, culture and national identity,” Mema said.
Queen Teuta remains one of the best-known figures of ancient Illyrian history. The new monument aims to highlight her legacy and strengthen the area’s cultural identity.
The statue is also expected to become a new stop for visitors traveling along the Shëngjin-Velipojë route.
The monument further expands the area’s tourism offer. It brings history and cultural heritage closer to visitors while adding a new attraction to the coastal landscape.
