The 24th Tirana International Film Festival opens tonight and runs through September 27. The festival brings 230 feature-length and short films to the capital under this year’s theme, “Bring It Back! Humanography.” The programme focuses on human stories, emotions and individual experiences through cinema. The Albanian Telegraphic Agency remains an official TIFF partner.
The competition programme includes debut feature films and documentaries. The short-film competition covers Live Action, Animation, Documentary, Video Art & Experimental, Student Films, Balkan Shorts and In Albanian Shorts. The PANORAMA section includes Generations, New World, Divergent Minds, Parade and AI 3.0. The latter explores new forms of audiovisual storytelling. RetrospecTIFF pays tribute to Italian director Luchino Visconti with Obsession (Ossessione, 1943), Rocco and His Brothers (Rocco e i suoi fratelli, 1960) and The Innocent (L’innocente, 1976). TIFF also continues its KIDs & TEENs programme for children and teenagers.
After the opening ceremony, TIFF will officially begin with the national premiere of Mother by North Macedonian director Teona Strugar Mitevska. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2025. It tells the story of the nun who became the religious icon Mother Teresa. Special screenings include Shame and Money by Visar Morina, The Bow and the Brush, and Live a Little by Fanny Ovesen. Made In ALBANIAn presents new Albanian-language films from Albania and Kosova. TIFF will close with the restored 4K version of Xhanfise Keko’s 1973 Albanian film “Mimoza, the Spoiled Girl”. The festival will present the restored version as a world premiere.
