TIRANA, June 18 – Academician Luan Omari received the Golden Star of the Veteran award on the occasion of his 101st birthday.
The Academy of Sciences hosted a ceremony in his honour. The event opened with a song dedicated to Omari by “Thesaret labe” [Labëria Treasuries]. Academics, jurists, veterans, and former students attended the gathering. Participants honoured one of the most prominent figures in Albanian legal scholarship.
Meanwhile, organisers awarded Omari the title Golden Star of the National Liberation War Veteran. The award recognized his participation in the National Liberation War and his contribution to law and education. Lawyer Idajet Beqiri organized the event. Omari’s daughter, Anila Omari, received the decoration on his behalf.
For decades, Omari led the Faculty of Law and taught at the University of Tirana. He also represented Albania in the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe. Attendees described him as a model of professional and civic integrity.
Born in Gjirokastër, Omari completed his early education in Bari, Italy. Later, he graduated from the Italian high school in Tirana. He pursued legal studies in Belgrade and Sofia. The academic became one of the most distinguished jurists of his generation.
In addition, Omari remains one of the few Albanian academics to have reached the age of 101. He is also the last surviving founder of the Academy of Sciences, established in 1972. Earlier, the institution awarded him the Academic Career Prize in 2016. Later, the President of the Republic awarded him the George Kastrioti Skanderbeg Decoration in 2020.
