The Academy of Sciences of Albania held a scholarly memorial event to mark the 135th anniversary of the birth of Osman Myderrizi. The event focused on his life, work and contributions to linguistics, literature, history and Albanian national culture.
The Academy’s Permanent Commission on Linguistics and Literature organized the event. Prof. Dr. Anila Omari moderated the discussion. She highlighted Myderrizi’s multifaceted and patriotic profile, as well as his major contributions to Albanian education, science and culture.
The event examined different aspects of his life and career. These included his political and public engagement, his participation in Albania’s first Parliament, and his work as a journalist, teacher and researcher. Speakers also discussed his periods of exile and internment.
Meanwhile, the scholarly presentations focused on the wide range of Myderrizi’s work. In particular, they examined his contributions to linguistics, lexicography, the study of old Albanian texts, onomastics, and the history of Albanian language and literature.
Prof. Dr. Seit Mansaku presented a study on “Osman Myderrizi’s Contribution to Linguistics.” He highlighted Myderrizi’s work as a grammarian, lexicographer and scholar of old Albanian texts. He also emphasized his contribution to the study of literary Albanian and spelling.
Prof. Dr. Anila Omari, meanwhile, discussed Myderrizi’s contribution to toponymy and the study of Albanian autochthony. She also compared his approach with Pan-Slavist theories on the settlement of Slavs in Albania.
Another aspect of Myderrizi’s work was addressed by Prof. Dr. Albert Doja. He focused on Myderrizi’s role as a scientific critic and examined the relationship between knowledge, science and the political and social developments of his time.
The participants also discussed Myderrizi’s contribution to the study of Albanian writings in the Arabic alphabet and the manuscripts of Gjirokastër. Prof. Dr. Mimoza Kore examined this written heritage, while Dr. Fatos Dibra presented several Albanian texts from the Islamic tradition. He also highlighted Myderrizi’s work in transcribing and conducting philological studies of these texts.
Prof. Dr. Enika Abazi, Myderrizi’s granddaughter, offered a personal perspective on his life and work. She highlighted the exceptional breadth of his interests, which ranged from history, linguistics, ethnology and lexicography to literature and national culture.
In closing, Engjëllushe Karaj presented a study conducted with Academician Valter Memisha on Osman Myderrizi’s extensive collection at the Archive of the Institute of Linguistics and Literature. The participants stressed the importance of this collection for further research into his work. They also discussed the possibility of publishing his previously unpublished manuscripts.
Overall, the scholarly event brought renewed attention to Osman Myderrizi’s contribution to Albanian studies, linguistics and national culture. It also highlighted the lasting value of his legacy for future research.
